Frequently Asked Questions
Congratulations on your engagement! I can imagine your mind is buzzing with countless thoughts and questions. You’re not alone in this. I’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions I receive as a marriage celebrant. Take your time to browse through them, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need more information.
What is a civil ceremony?
A civil ceremony is a non-religious legal marriage ceremony conducted by a celebrant. It can be customised to reflect the couple's personal beliefs and values.
What documents do we need to provide?
You will need to prove your identity (through the provision of a birth certificate, passport or driver's license for example), and any relevant divorce or death certificates if you have been previously married.
You also need to lodge with a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) with me at least one calendar month before the ceremony. It must be signed in the presence of an authorised witness. I will prepare this document for you.
How long before the wedding do we need to book you?
Most couples book me at least six to twelve months in advance. However, I may be able to accommodate shorter notice periods depending on availability and your needs.
How long does a civil ceremony last?
A typical civil ceremony lasts between 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the elements you choose to include.
Can we personalise our ceremony?
Absolutely! One of the benefits of a civil ceremony is that it can be tailored to reflect your personalities, beliefs, and love story. I can help you include personal vows, readings, and any rituals that are meaningful to you.
During your marriage ceremony, I must state my authority to marry you. Ie "I am duly authorised by law to solemnise marriages according to law. Before you are joined in marriage in my presence and in the presence of these witnesses, I am to remind you of the solemn and binding nature of the relationship into which you are now about to enter. Marriage, according to law in Australia, is the union of two people, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.” (or words to that effect.)
You both state your the legal vows. Ie: "I call upon the persons here present, to witness that I, (your full name), take you, (their full name), to be my lawful wedded wife/husband/partner in marriage." (or words to that effect.)
Then you, your partner, your two witnesses, and I will sign the Official Marriage Certificate and the commemorative certificate. And that’s it, everything else is whatever you both want!
Do you perform ceremonies at any location?
Yes, I am happy to perform ceremonies at a variety of locations, including parks, beaches, private homes, and venues. Just let me know your preferred location and we can discuss the logistics. Fees will apply for locations further than 50kms from my home.
What happens during the initial consultation?
During the initial consultation, we will discuss your vision for the ceremony, the legal requirements, and how we can make your day special. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions and get to know me better.
Do you offer rehearsal ceremonies?
Yes, I offer a venue rehearsal to ensure that everyone involved feels comfortable and knows their roles on the big day. This can help alleviate any nerves and ensure a smooth ceremony.
What is your fee and what does it include?
My fee includes the a booking fee to hold the date and time exclusively for you, unlimited meetings (in-person or remotely), ceremony planning, a bespoke ceremony script, resources, rehearsal, travel within a specified distance, and the officiation of your ceremony. Additional fees may apply for travel beyond this area or additional services.
